City Council Preview · August 24, 2026
Monday’s meeting doubles as a brownfield buffet. Five separate OPRA and brownfield items are on the consent agenda alone, with more scattered through the regular docket.
🔦 The 3 items worth your attention
A resolution would end the city’s relationship with Flock, the company running Lansing’s automated license plate reader cameras. If it moves forward, every city agreement with Flock gets terminated and the camera network goes dark. The civil liberties debate around ALPRs has been running in cities nationally for years; Lansing’s council is now squarely in it. (Item 15)
The Grand Tower Building takes a step Monday. New Vision Lansing LLC is asking the city for use of public right-of-way and air rights along the 200 block of S. Grand Ave., a move that would let a private developer build over and into public space in the heart of downtown. Council considers Act-5-2026. (Item 14)
Two new ordinances get introduced, not finalized, but worth watching. One would carve out dedicated city funding for supportive housing services by adding a new section to city code. The other would create an Office of the Independent Internal Auditor, a standalone oversight function that doesn’t currently exist. Both need a second reading before anything happens. (Items 16, 17)
