City Commission Business Meeting · 2026-08-17

What happened at Kalamazoo’s Aug. 17 business meeting

Monday’s business meeting had four items headed for a vote, and one of them hit a snag nobody planned for: a drafting error in the data center moratorium, caught out loud by the city’s own attorney before commissioners could act on it.

✅ What we can confirm

Commissioners approved a $3.2M contract with L.D. Docsa Associates, Inc. to replace filter media at the Central Treatment Plant, 7-0 (H-2). The plant’s original filter media has outlived its useful life, per the city, and this keeps the treatment plant running the way it’s supposed to.

They also approved the ordinance and notice-of-sale resolution authorizing up to $20.4M in Water Supply System Revenue Bonds, Series 2026, 7-0 (H-3), to help finance the water system’s capital improvement program.

Same margin for the General Obligation Limited Tax Bonds resolution: up to $9.4M passed 7-0 (H-4), covering a mix of facility upgrades, park work, technology, heavy equipment and street projects for this fiscal year.

The data center moratorium took the long way there. Commissioners were set to vote on the resolution barring new applications for data centers, cryptocurrency mining centers, battery energy storage systems and AI data centers (H-6) when the city attorney flagged a cross-reference error in the resolution’s own text. They amended it on the floor, unanimously, then adopted the corrected version 7-0 (H-6). This follows the moratorium’s path from a July discussion item to Monday’s formal vote.

❓ No clear outcome

No Minutes file is posted for this meeting yet. The four items above are confirmed through the meeting’s own transcript. The rest of Monday’s agenda doesn’t have a confirmable outcome on the record yet, so we’re not characterizing it here. We’ll follow up if anything changes once minutes are posted.
