Planning Commission Preview, September 3, 2026

Kalamazoo is hitting pause on data centers. That’s the whole meeting, really.

🔦 The 3 items worth your attention

One item dominates this agenda so completely that the other two spotlight slots would be a stretch to fill. So here’s the full picture on what actually matters Thursday night.

A moratorium on data centers, crypto mining, and AI facilities is heading for zoning law. The City Commission put a temporary freeze on accepting applications for these uses back on August 17. Now it’s the Planning Commission’s turn: commissioners will hold a public hearing and consider sending a favorable recommendation to write that freeze into Chapter 50 of the Zoning Ordinance itself. It’s not the final word, the City Commission still has to act, but this is the step that gives the moratorium teeth in the actual zoning code. (E-1)

Why, per the city: Staff need time to develop regulations that protect public health, safety, and welfare, identify suitable locations, and create standards to ensure data centers, battery energy storage systems, cryptocurrency mining centers, and AI data centers are responsibly managed.

The driver is Southwest Michigan’s growing development pressure combined with community concerns about noise, water usage, energy demand, and environmental compatibility. Worth showing up to comment if any of those issues hit close to home, public hearings are exactly the right moment.

The Asylum Lake Preservation Association has submitted a letter to the commission. Commissioners will receive and acknowledge it, but the agenda doesn’t specify its contents. If you have a connection to Asylum Lake, it’s worth attending to hear what ALPA put in writing. (D-1)

🏗️ Roads & property

Nothing on this agenda touches infrastructure, land acquisition, or property transactions.

💰 Where the money’s going

📌 Also notable

The City Planner will deliver a routine update on current planning activities (G-1), and commissioners will review the active development application tracker (G-2), standard housekeeping to close the meeting.

The June 4 meeting minutes are up for routine sign-off (C-1).

Public comment: The public hearing on item E-1 is your formal opportunity to speak on the zoning moratorium. The meeting is September 3, 2026.
